The memorial ceremony will begin at 6 pm with the laying of wreaths on Kranjčić’s grave at the Križevci City Cemetery. At 7 pm, the rector of the National Shrine of St. Josip in Karlovac, Msgr. Antun Sente Jr. in the church of st. Ana to lead the Eucharistic memorial celebration dedicated to Stjepan Kranjčić.

Musically, the Mass will be animated by “Agape” – the youth choir of the National Shrine.

Members of the Drama Society “Ozana” from Visoko near Novi Marof will perform the drama-stage play “Štefekova srečica” in the church. The author of that game is Tibor Martan.

The ceremony will be held in accordance with current epidemiological measures.

The organizers of the Kranjčić celebration are the Association for the Promotion of Famous People of Križevci “Dr. Stjepan Kranjčić ”and the parish of St. Ana and BDM Žalosna and St. Marko Križevčanin.

The event is organized by the Association of Winemakers and Vineyards “Bilikum” Križevci, the Tourist Board of the City of Križevci and the City of Križevci.

Saint Marko of Križevci is the third Croatian saint, and a large number of believers gather in Križevci on his feast day. The program of celebrating the Day of St. Mark Križevčanin, the patron saint of the town of Križevci, Koprivnica-Križevci County and the Bjelovar-Križevci Diocese, is held from late August to mid-September, and is filled with many spiritual events.

Back in 1242, before the invasion of the Mongol conquerors, King Bela IV took refuge with his army under the auspices of the walls of Kalnik, a town situated on the slopes of Kalnik. The persistence of the Mongol army to penetrate into the interior of the walls and defeat the king’s army was thwarted by the peasants of Kalnik who fed the brave soldiers with domestic plums. The strong fruit gave the king’s soldiers the strength to endure to the end and repel the Mongol attack. That is why Bela IV conferred noble titles to all the peasants who helped them. The move angered the citizens of Križevci, whose rage lasted for years until the accidental marriage of a Kalnik plum grower and a city girl. Their wedding was a key moment of reconciliation.

Today, the people of Križevci and Kalnik are performing a stage presentation of that event. With the play, the keys to the city are handed over to the town judge and the three days of the general celebration begins.

On that day, Ban Stjepan proclaimed the Upper Town a new royal city, giving the people living in it the same liberties that the citizens of Grič and the New City of Zagreb enjoyed. The charter of Ban Stjepan was confirmed by King Bela IV on August 16, 1253. On this day, the city traditionally hosts numerous cultural and artistic events.

The ceremony, which takes place outdoors in the vineyards in the area of Križevci and Kalnički prigorje, is attended by the host and the bishop, cupbearer, bell ringer, singers and tamburitza players, and the vine is decorated with sausages that symbolize the fertility of the future harvest. The first part of the ceremony is performed outdoors in the vineyard, and the second takes place in the cellars or wine cellars with a good drink, homemade antique dishes and drinks.
