The memorial ceremony will begin at 6 pm with the laying of wreaths on Kranjčić’s grave at the Križevci City Cemetery. At 7 pm, the rector of the National Shrine of St. Josip in Karlovac, Msgr. Antun Sente Jr. in the church of st. Ana to lead the Eucharistic memorial celebration dedicated to Stjepan Kranjčić.

Musically, the Mass will be animated by “Agape” – the youth choir of the National Shrine.

Members of the Drama Society “Ozana” from Visoko near Novi Marof will perform the drama-stage play “Štefekova srečica” in the church. The author of that game is Tibor Martan.

The ceremony will be held in accordance with current epidemiological measures.

The organizers of the Kranjčić celebration are the Association for the Promotion of Famous People of Križevci “Dr. Stjepan Kranjčić ”and the parish of St. Ana and BDM Žalosna and St. Marko Križevčanin.

Back in 1242, before the Mongol invasion, King Bela IV took refuge with his army under the auspices of the walls of Kalnik, a town situated on the slopes of Kalnik. The persistence of the Mongol army to penetrate into the interior of the walls and defeat the king’s army was thwarted by the peasants of Kalnik who fed the brave soldiers with domestic plums. The strong fruit gave the king’s soldiers the strength to endure to the end and repel the Mongol attack. That is why Bela IV conferred noble titles to all the peasants who helped. The move angered the citizens of Križevci, whose rage lasted for years until the accidental marriage of a Kalnik plum grower and a local girl from Križevci. Their wedding was a key moment of reconciliation.

Today, the people of Križevci and Kalnik are performing a stage show of that event. With the play, the keys to the city are handed over to the town judge and the three days of the general celebration begin.  

After the godfather is chosen as the godfather, the wine bishops and ministers will invoke the blessing according to a written ritual and baptize the must into wine that will invigorate the soul and body. We invite you to the solemn ceremony of the baptism of the young wine in Križevci. Our St. Martin masters will take care of the top entertainment and plenty of laughter with a special must baptism ceremony. Everyone gathered will be able to try the wines of many local winegrowers, as well as homemade cakes, cracklings and cured meat products.

The event is organized by the Association of Winemakers and Vineyards “Bilikum” Križevci, the Tourist Board of the City of Križevci and the City of Križevci.

Saint Marko of Križevci is the third Croatian saint, and a large number of believers gather in Križevci on his feast day. The program of celebrating the Day of St. Mark Križevčanin, the patron saint of the town of Križevci, Koprivnica-Križevci County and the Bjelovar-Križevci Diocese, is held from late August to mid-September, and is filled with many spiritual events.

The Križevci statutes primarily advocate joy and happiness in a good society where friendships and good interpersonal relationships are spread, but they explicitly warn that consuming wine and spirits is done wisely, because everything that is done excessively is not good for the individual, and for the society.

Centuries later, the city gets a large number of public and private wells. Public wells still represent a specific decoration of the City of Križevci that adorns more than ten locations in the narrower and wider city center. Today’s preserved wells were created during the Art Nouveau, and were built for the purpose of supplying the population with drinking water. They were built during the 19th century, repaired after II. World War II and today represent a unique decoration of the city. The most famous city well stood on the main city square of Josip Juraj Strossmayer, not far from the building of the former Synagogue, but it was covered with renovations. On Zrinski (today Nemčić’s) square, as early as 1899, there is Nemčić’s bust by Rudolf Valdec, whose old fence was replaced in 1906 with a new one made of braided wire. The new well is being decorated by Zagreb tinsmith Aleksandar Maruzzi by placing a cast-iron candelabra on a stone pedestal.

Almost uniform in design, the wells are covered with a concrete slab lined with a stone wall, and from the middle rises a “trunk” drilled in the middle that enters the depth of the well. On the upper, visible part, a handle is attached for pumping over the lever, and on the left, somewhere around the half, a metal pipe comes out, finally bent downwards, through which water flows after pumping. Under the pipe is a concrete element – a drain into which water flows and drains if it has not been used. Numerous famous residents and visitors of the town of Križevci fortified themselves at public wells.

On that day, Ban Stjepan proclaimed the Upper Town a new royal city, giving the people living in it the same liberties that the citizens of Grič and the New City of Zagreb enjoyed. The charter of Ban Stjepan was confirmed by King Bela IV on August 16, 1253. On this day, the city traditionally hosts numerous cultural and artistic events.
